Yes, the vast ocean is always full of opportunities, as well as danger! You corsair may sink, but there is nothing to worry about, if you learn the knowledge below.
Sinking
Fuel will be used the moment the corsair is out in the sea. When the fuel reaches 0, the durability of the corsair will be deducted. If the corsair durability falls below 0, the corsair will sink and pirate will be considered dead.
The fuel reaches 0, the durability of the corsair is deducted, the corsair is smoking!
After sinking, pirate will be asked to revive in town :(
And...
Salvage
Pirates can salvage back their sunken corsairs at the location stated by the "Vessel Deed" and talk to the Harbor Operator to salvage back on their behalf.
Find your "Vessel Deed":
Right click on it and check out where your sunken corsair was finally docked:
Talk to the Harbor Operator and pay the salvage bill (1000 coins):
